Defeat SB 860
Statement from OEA President Alicia Priest on Senate Bill 860
“The citizens of Oklahoma deserve better than Senate Bill 860, the budget bill cobbled together in the dark of last night. Legislative leadership is attempting to rush this bill from introduction to passage in a mere three days, despite the fact that it does not address our state's long-term funding needs. We must escape the cycle of governing from one fiscal year crisis to the next.
“SB 860 is not a ‘flat budget,’ as legislative leaders say. It fails to fund the increase in student enrollment our schools will see in August, which means our state's per pupil spending will decline even further. Considering our state has made the largest per pupil spending cuts in the nation, with the passage of SB 860 we can look forward to solidifying our last place position for yet another year.
“Finally, despite repeated promises on their campaign trails, and multiple publicity-garnering bills introduced by legislators this session, SB 860 does not include a pay raise for education employees. The bill, therefore, fails to address the statewide teacher shortage crisis, outrageous class sizes, limited course offerings, four-day school weeks, or any other serious problem facing Oklahoma public schools.
“The Oklahoma Education Association calls on the members of the Oklahoma State Legislature to govern boldly by rejecting the mediocrity of SB 860. It's time to call for a special session and demand better for Oklahoma's children. We can't afford not to.”
