Special Session Was a Dismal Failure
OEA President Alicia Priest's statement on the legislative special session:
“The legislative special session was a dismal failure.
“The OEA is extremely disappointed that a minority of obstructionist legislators in the House managed to prevent passage of much needed revenue. Instead, they are going to use one-time money and cut dozens of agencies already strapped for funding while protecting corporate tax breaks.
“These decisions put our state even further behind, causing us to start the regular legislative session hundreds of millions of dollars in the hole. Apparently there is no political will to do what Oklahomans are asking, which is to fund core government services.
“The reality for education is that more teachers will leave the state or the profession, class sizes will continue to increase, and there will be no money for curriculum, textbooks, and other basics. It’s time for Oklahomans to demand change, both in the coming legislative session and next November at the ballot box.”
