This Budget Fails To Uphold Legislative Promises
OEA President Alicia Priest’s statement on the state budget
May 26, 2017
“The legislature failed to uphold its promises to Oklahoma today by passing SB 860. They failed to find revenue for a pay increase that would have helped us stem the exodus of teachers from our state and profession. They failed to find a long-term solution to a budget crisis that will see us start the next legislative session with another budget hole.
“This was a session of missed opportunities to set our state on a path to success. Instead, we gave oil and gas another pass and gave education a ‘flat’ budget. But we know that we’ll start school in August with more students, overcrowded classrooms, and additional cuts due to potential revenue failure.
“At the beginning of the session, Gov. Fallin said she would not sign a budget that did not find new revenue and fund core governmental services. We call on her to keep her word and veto this constitutionally questionable budget.”
