Waking Sleeping Giants

The people spoke loudly and clearly in yesterday’s election. Current State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi was defeated. What a huge victory for public education, Oklahoma’s children, teachers, parents, and education support professionals!

It’s a victory because each of the existing candidates has said they will work collaboratively with educators and parents to move our schools in a positive direction. No more focus on labeling and punishing children, but instead, improving learning and instruction.

The voters spoke with rigor about where the reforms in education should be focused. Their vote clearly indicated they are tired of the negativity that has surrounded public education the past four years. Their vote puts students first and testing companies last. This was said in a unified, statewide voice when not one county voted in the majority for Superintendent Barresi.

The equally exciting result is that teachers, parents and support professionals have united and said enough is enough. Opponents of public education have awakened the sleeping giants – parents, educators and support professionals.  The last four years have been frustrating and trying for those who work in public schools. It’s been four years of everything from meaningless school grades, testing debacles, labeling and punishing students based on a one-size-fits all test, blaming and finger pointing – the list goes on and on.

But, as of yesterday’s election, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Each of the remaining candidates has said publicly that they are willing to work in collaboration with educators and parents. That, my friends, will be a change in the right direction for the right reason – the public education of Oklahoma’s children.
