Who's Pulling This Sinister Sleigh?
“You Know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet, Cupid, and Donner and Blitzen. But do you recall? The most famous reindeer of all? Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer…” from the song Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.
As the holidays approach children and adults have visions of Santa’s sleigh being pulled by his famous reindeer. It’s a team of those bringing good to all.
If only we could say there was a sleigh full of good intentions for public education. Instead we have a sleigh of a different, sinister sort being pulled by those whose intent is to devalue public education and then turn education into for-profit businesses.
Who’s in that sleigh, and who’s pulling it you might ask? Well, let’s begin with who is in the sleigh. It’s the so called “reformers” of public education – those groups who want to put on the public persona that they are doing good deeds. Alas, their motives are far from good. The bottom line for them is profit. Profit made at the expense of our children’s education.
And then who’s pulling them along? You know the Arnold Foundation, our State Superintendent, the A-F grading system proponents, Chiefs for Change, Student’s First, testing companies and pension reformers. And then do you recall the most famous group of all? ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council.
So just like every child watches closely at Christmastime for Santa and his team, we have to watch closely for the sleigh of reformers and their team. Unlike Santa, they are up to no good.
