Failure of SB 1647 is a win for public school students

Public School ProudSB 1647, a voucher bill that could have destroyed rural public education, was defeated on the senate floor late Wednesday night (March 23). Following is OEA President Katherine Bishop’s response to the vote:

“The bipartisan defeat of SB 1647 in the Senate was a huge win for Oklahoma’s children. Those who want to defund public education pulled out all of the stops, but teachers, support professionals, administrators and parents around the state stood up for their local schools. We called, emailed and visited with our senators at home and at the Capitol and it made a difference. While we celebrate the win today, we need to remain vigilant with our legislators for all of Oklahoma’s students to ensure this victory holds until the end of the session.”
