President Bishop responds to proposed education budget

On Thursday, State Superintendent Ryan Walters presented his proposed education budget to the state board, who voted unanimously to approve it be brought to the state legislature for consideration. The proposed budget by Ryan Walters cut funding requests for public education by nearly $60 million and eliminated $160 million originally planned for a teacher pay raise for the first time in six years.

Below is the response from OEA President Katherine Bishop:

Every dollar spent on public education is an investment into the future of Oklahoma. That is why we are concerned this proposal is nearly $60 million less than the previously proposed education budget.

It is also concerning that “school choice” was again listed as a top priority. Oklahoma parents and students have expansive school choice with open enrollment across the state. However, the vast majority choose to send their children to their local public school and want their leaders to invest in their communities.

82% of Oklahomans favor raising education funding to match neighboring states.

Part of funding education is ensuring competitive salary for education professionals in the region. The metrics used to determine merit-based pay are controversial and inequitable. Our students deserve educators who are compensated and respected as the professionals they are. Previous pay raises for all educators have proven to increase quality candidates to the profession.

89% of Oklahomans favor increased salaries for public school professionals.

We should listen to the people of Oklahoma as we continue to combat real issues like the educator shortage crisis.

In Solidarity,

Katherine Bishop, OEA President
