Tyler Outlaw, a former middle school teacher in Norman, has joined the OEA staff as a legislative and political organizing specialist for the west side of the state and a member of the association’s Southwest Regional Team.
Outlaw graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in social studies education. He taught eighth grade U.S. History, Oklahoma History, and Current Events at Alcott Middle School in Norman from 2016 before coming to OEA.
At Alcott, Outlaw was the social studies department head and a member of the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Social Studies Writing Team (Oklahoma History) for the State Department of Education.
He was also active in the Professional Educators of Norman, the OEA local affiliate, serving as building representative and on the PEN organizing team.
“Moving from a middle school classroom to this position is a little scary. I will miss my colleagues and my students tremendously,” Outlaw said. “But the chance to advocate for the students, the teachers, and the support staff of Oklahoma’s public schools is the opportunity of a lifetime. I am honored to have this opportunity and am ready to get to work.”
Tyler’s wife, Kathy, is a counselor at Norman High School. Their daughter, Caroline, is nearly 2 years old.
